Enjoy the photos of the Younkin, Smith, Borland and Simon families during their childhood and visits to Wenatchee
The four sister families in Wenatchee, WA, circa 1960.
Wenatchee Apple Blossom Festival is an annual tradition with parades, fairs, carnivals, and car shows. Diane Younkin was lucky enough to ride one of the floats in the parade that her mom Valena had designed. The royalty was from Sunnyslope, Diane was a princess and John Benim was the float designer and Stuart McDougall was one of the matadors. The name of the float was 'Lady of Spain'. The year would have been 1966.
Beth Borland in front of her home in Hawthorn CA, borlands would travel to Wenatchee, WA in the summers.
I remember climbing to the tip top of t=our birch tree as a lookout for Borlands annual arrival.

Jim became interested in climbing to a degree of driving pitons in the basement concrete wall and bivouacking in what was then his bedroom. Out of the many mountain tales his most memorable lesson was never climb on Sunday. Jim was caught in an avalanche on Dragontail, a steep face in the Stuart Mountain Range, where a week later a fellow climber was killed in a rock slide. Jim was caught in a snowslide.
Rick Smith, youngest of Otto and Vera's sons, is one of the four cousins, boys born within a year to each of the four sisters, lived and settled in the Wenatchee valley.

Vera, (the oldest of the four sisters) and her husband Otto moved to Wenatchee after Mel and Valena had taken over PaPa's warehouse and orchard oerations. Otto managed the farm and later went to work for the Reclamation, where his youngest son Rick eventually became the superintendent of. The Smith's loved to shoot and hunt. Each year the four boys and parents would run an Elk camp up the Clockum southeast of Wenatchee.
